I found a $1600 LG 2-in-1 that actually does it all

For most people, a laptop is an essential part of their tech lineup. It can provide a means for personal admin, remote work, entertainment, and creativity. That kind of versatility can be tricky to achieve, especially when you want portability along with all that functionality.

LG is looking to provide such a comprehensive laptop with its series of 2-in-1 gram models, designed to be light and multi-faceted. It’s a laptop and a tablet and tries to support just about every activity you might have in mind. I tested out the LG gram Pro 2-in-1 laptop for a few weeks. Here’s what I found out.

Price, availability, and specs

LG’s gram Pro offers use as both a laptop and tablet, with a thin, convertible design and touch display. It includes an HDMI 2.1 port as well as two USB-A slots. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 offer reliable, top-end connections.

The gram Pro 2-in-1 features Windows 11 Home and is backed by an Intel Arrow Lake H processor. It comes loaded with AI features, including Copilot and gram AI. It’s available from Amazon, Best Buy, and directly from LG. The gram Pro retails for around $1,600, although more expensive models are available with more advanced features, including a unit with an OLED screen.

What I liked about the LG gram Pro 2 in 1

Touchscreen, hinge, and size make for versatile usage

The gram Pro is designed to support a variety of functions, whether at home, in the office, or on the move. At 16 inches, it offers a sizable screen as well as a large keyboard, allowing for convenient use without necessarily needing to attach any peripherals. It’s made for work and play, streaming and creating, whether alone or with friends or colleagues.

Perhaps its most prominent feature is its lightweight construction; it’s built into the name, after all. This is a very light laptop, easy to take with you and move around the home or office, though it certainly doesn’t feel fragile.

This model boasts a touchscreen and a 360-degree hinge that allows you to set up the laptop in a few different ways, from creating a stand with the keyboard or laying the entire device flat on a surface. Adjusting it is effortless, yet every position feels sturdy, and there are enough practical applications here to make this feature feel important rather than an afterthought. The inclusion of a strong stylus is a plus.

Its versatility is evident. I streamed Netflix shows and worked with multiple tabs open, I made designs in Canva and conducted video calls with colleagues. The gram is fast and efficient, and perhaps most importantly, catered to the way I want to use a laptop.

The battery is plenty sufficient, running for eight to 12 hours depending on use; the USB-C charging port makes juicing up the laptop convenient with the included power cord or surely any you have around space. Its HDMI 2.1 port along with numerous USB slots increase convenience and functionality.

What I didn’t like about the LG gram Pro 2 in 1

AI, aesthetics, and power are questionable

Devices like this that offer a lot of functionality often end up sacrificing precision and power for the ability to cover a lot of ground. So there are some trade-offs here. While the unit is thin and light, for example, it’s still cumbersome at 16-inches in size; if you’re going to employ it as a tablet or place it flat on a surface, you’ll need to make sure you have enough room.

The biggest concern is power and performance when it comes to intense activities; this isn’t a laptop designed for online gaming with the newest titles, and I would shy away from heavy-duty video editing and rendering. It’s really when you move into the intensive category of a number of activities that you want to exercise caution. Casual streaming, casual content creation, and casual gaming are fine here, but I wouldn’t rely on it as your primary means of these activities. It’s more of a generalist than a specialist, which will be great for a lot of users, but not for all.

There’s also the Windows element to consider, and a major push to have AI be a part of your laptop experience. There is plenty of stuff to wade through when first setting up the gram that I didn’t quite care for, having you sign up and enable a variety of programs that I didn’t want to use, and you may not either. Your relationship with both Windows and AI features may determine just how well you enjoy all the laptop offers.

The keyboard and trackpad are adequate. If you’re operating at a station, I’d recommend hooking up an external mouse and keyboard as I did. When used as a tablet, the stylus will suffice. I’m not thrilled with the speakers, but I wasn’t expecting anything worthwhile; I’m someone who always connects to a Bluetooth speaker.

I did note, while running many tabs and programs simultaneously, that the fan was quite audible. Still, I didn’t encounter any lag when executing functions, and the unit stayed cool.

Lastly, there isn’t much to the look of the unit. It’s not a big deal for me, but some consumers may prefer more style in their laptop if they’re going to be taking it around with them.

Should you buy the LG gram Pro 2in1?

There is plenty to embrace about this lightweight, slim, and versatile laptop, but the main question comes down to value and how you plan on using it due to its relatively high price. The main draw, I think, is its use as a business laptop, both in a home office and on the move. There is value in collaborative work because of its size and hinge. However, if you’re going to lean into creative activities and embrace the touchscreen and tablet aspect, just consider its power and size first.

If you’re looking for a laptop that can do a lot of activities well, and you’re fond of Windows and someone who embraces AI features, this is likely a worthwhile investment.
