I’ve been using my LG TV for a few months now, and while I’ve spent plenty of time digging through the settings to turn off ads, clear the cache, and tweak the picture to make it sharper, one small thing I didn’t change until recently has actually made a big difference: its name.
You might be thinking, what’s the big deal about renaming your TV? Fair question. But if you regularly cast from apps on your phone or tablet to your TV — such as YouTube, Disney+, Spotify, Apple TV, you name it — changing the name makes it much easier to tell which screen you’re casting on.
This is especially helpful if you live in an apartment or a house like mine, where there are multiple smart TVs. Renaming your TV makes it instantly recognizable in the casting menu and a lot less confusing when you’re using smart home controls, too.
By default, my LG TV had the thrilling name of “[LG] webOS TV OLED 48C5PUA,” which isn’t exactly memorable. Thankfully, changing it took just a few seconds, and it’s one of those tiny tweaks that makes a noticeable difference in day-to-day use. Plus, of course, you can have some fun with it, too.
How to change the name of your LG TV
You can find it under TV Information in settings
Fortunately, changing the name of your LG TV only takes a few seconds. Here’s how to do it step-by-step:
1. Press the Settings button on your remote (the gear icon).
2. A side menu will appear on the left side of your screen. Select Settings again.
3. Then navigate to Support > TV Information.
4. Select Device Name.
5. Rename your LG TV to whatever you want.
And voilà, just like that, your LG TV has a new name. When you go to cast to it, you’ll see its new name appear in the menu, making it easier to pick out which screen is yours and, importantly, preventing you from accidentally casting to the wrong TV. Additionally, if you integrate your TV with your smart home, such as Google Home, you can now refer to it by its new name.
Changing the name of your TV isn’t unique to LG TVs, so if you have another TV in your household, such as a Samsung, Sony, Hisense, or TCL, you should be able to find a setting to change the device name on those models as well. If you can’t, a quick Google search should point you in the right direction.
I’ve covered a lot of other LG TV tips and tricks here on Pocket-lint, so if you’re looking to get more out of your LG TV, there are plenty of other things you can do as well, such as discovering a secret settings menu, changing the power-on screen to always show your last input, and using Memory Optimizer to speed up the TV.
