It appears that LG has officially decided to withdraw from the 8K television market; the company has halted the production of both OLED and LCD 8K TVs and has also discontinued the manufacturing of its own 8K panels. According to LG, consumer demand for the technology never materialized, largely due to the near-total absence of native 8K content capable of justifying the high cost of these products.
LG’s departure has resulted in an even more restricted 8K TV market. The format is currently being actively pursued by Samsung, the sole major manufacturer. In recent years, other brands have already retreated from the segment: TCL dropped out in 2023, Sony terminated its 8K projects in 2025, Hisense significantly reduced its focus, and Panasonic never progressed beyond the prototype stage. For its part, Philips has characterized the market as “immature.”
LG’s dedication to 8K started in 2019 when the 88-inch OLED Z9, which retailed for about €30,000 (about $35,372), was introduced. The model was considered the pinnacle of OLED panel innovation at the time. The ZX, Z1, Z2, and Z3 series were added to the lineup by LG in later years, providing additional size options and slight enhancements to the image quality.
Production was formally stopped at the end of 2025 in spite of these efforts, and no plans for a possible Z4 model in 2026 were disclosed. The ecosystem surrounding 8K has always been the main problem. There is very little authentic 8K content available, and because of its extremely high bandwidth requirements, major streaming platforms have mostly shunned the format.
At the same time, LG has changed its emphasis from making higher resolution its main selling point to more distinctive TV designs. Compatibility problems resulting from compressed 8K signals sent via HDMI 2.1 have also been a technical obstacle, impeding widespread adoption. Even attempts to use gaming to promote 8K were not very successful. Due to the limited selection of compatible games and TVs, the PlayStation 5 Pro’s 8K support was mainly overlooked. Well, it looks like the market is still unprepared for a complete shift to 8K, as reiterated by LG’s withdrawal.
